Neck Training Devices, 1891–1970
Eighteen patents for purpose-built neck apparatus, with the inventors' own stated reasoning — a catalogue that has never existed before.
The first US patent for a device whose sole purpose was exercising the neck was granted on 14 April 1891 to Theodore Peterson of Akron, Ohio — a leather head harness with pivoting side straps running to gym wall-pulley weights. Over the following eighty years at least seventeen more followed: weighted helmets, spring-loaded headgear, chin-and-shoulder braces, bite-blocks, sand-filled football helmet covers, and belt-hung weights. Every mechanism sold today has an ancestor in this record.
Why patents are the best source we have
Almost everything written about the history of exercise equipment is reconstructed from advertisements, catalogues, and hearsay. Patents are different in one specific way that matters enormously: to obtain one, the inventor is legally required to explain what the device does and why.
That makes a patent disclosure a dated, sworn, primary-source statement of what somebody believed about training the neck at a particular moment in history. Nobody has ever collected these for neck devices. This page is the first attempt.
Each entry below was retrieved and read individually. Optical character recognition of 19th- and early-20th-century patent text is imperfect; quotations are given as close to verbatim as the source allows, and where a scan carries no machine-readable text at all, the entry says so rather than guessing.

What the inventors actually said
The clearest 19th-century statement of purpose
George Edwards, 1896, explaining why the resistance line attaches at the crown rather than the sides:
through the movements of the head, the muscles of the neck particularly are exercised and strengthened.
to provide, by reason of the connection with the head stall at the top of the head, for the exercising or movement of the head in every possible direction Without danger or liability of disarranging the headstall or harness.

Freedom of movement without the harness shifting is still the central design problem of every head harness sold today.
Folk observation turned into engineering
John Corker’s 1893 weighted helmet, justified entirely by watching people carry things:
People who in early years have carried burdens upon their heads, have a more erect carriage than those who have not done so, the law of gravity causing them to hold the body in such a position that the weight shall be supported directly above the feet.

The reasoning is pre-scientific and the observation is not wrong. Head-loading populations do carry themselves differently. What Corker could not know is whether the carriage caused the strength or the strength permitted the carriage.
Progressive overload, claimed as an invention in 1925
Henry Titus, whose headgear allowed additional elastic strands to be attached over time:
one or more strands may be secured to the loop 10, as the muscles of the neck increase in strength, thus the device becomes a progressive exerciser for the neck and upper shoulder muscles, the tension of which may be varied at will.

This is the earliest explicit progressive-overload claim in the neck-device record. It is worth reading alongside Hackenschmidt’s 1908 programme, which had already specified a complete double progression — reps to a ceiling, then a load increment and a rep reset — seventeen years earlier, in print, for free.
The design argument that still defines the category
Marvin Kinne, 1958, on mounting the weights on the head frame itself rather than running cables to a stack:
The weights 17, being mounted directly on the device, permit the head to be moved in any direction.

Every modern argument between fixed-path neck machines and free-loading harnesses is a continuation of this sentence.
Home use and self-dosing, 1957
Cesar Bustamante, whose chin-and-shoulder device was operated by the user pulling cords:
easily applied and manipulated by the person undergoing the treatment, whereby the treatment can be administered at home
the amount or duration of the stretching forces can be regulated or controlled by the patient himself

Note the vocabulary: treatment, patient. By the mid-1950s neck devices were being framed medically as often as athletically, and the two lineages — training apparatus and traction apparatus — run in parallel from here on.
Load granularity as a selling point
John Sharkey filed two neck patents on the same day in March 1961, one using sand and one using nesting metal weights. On the sand version, the load could be
minutely varied in order to control the stress and strain placed upon the neck muscles during use.

Two filings on one day for the same problem in two materials suggests a commercial product line rather than a hobbyist’s idea. Sharkey has not yet been identified.
What the record shows
Every modern mechanism is old. Harness-and-pulley (1891), weighted helmet (1893), elastic resistance (1906), spring resistance (1924), head-mounted weight (1958), and bite-block loading (1964) were all patented decades before the modern neck-training market existed. What has changed is materials, adjustability, and marketing.
The category splits early and never rejoins. From roughly 1945 onward there are two distinct lineages: training devices that add load, and traction devices that unload. They borrow each other’s language constantly. A significant amount of confusion in modern product marketing traces directly to this split.
Nobody measured anything. Not one of these eighteen disclosures contains a force figure, an angle, or a physiological measurement. The rationale is always mechanical description plus assertion. Quantification of what the neck actually experiences under load does not arrive until the crash-safety and aviation literature of the later twentieth century — see the research library.
Unconfirmed and outstanding
CA487905A (McComb, Exercising helmet, 1952) — the record and bibliographic data are confirmed, and it is cited as prior art by Sharkey’s US3128095 among others, but Google Patents carries no machine-readable text for it, only page images. It needs a direct retrieval from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office before it can be described.
European coverage is a hole. Pre-1970 British, German and French patents are largely un-OCR’d in the accessible databases. Espacenet and DEPATISnet, searched under CPC class A63B23/025, are the next step. Given that Sandow was operating a commercial physical culture business in London from the 1890s, there is almost certainly a British apparatus record that this catalogue is missing entirely.
Assignee-side searching has not been done. The Howard Manufacturing Company of Akron held the 1891 patent; period equipment makers such as Milo Bar-Bell, the Whitely Exerciser Company, Narragansett Machine and Spalding printed patent numbers directly on their apparatus pages. Their catalogues are held at the Stark Center.
