Neck training is the deliberate strengthening of the cervical musculature through resisted flexion, extension, lateral flexion, and rotation. It is one of the oldest documented forms of physical training — prescribed with specific loads in print by 1908, and patented as a purpose-built apparatus by 1891 — and one of the least understood. This archive collects what is actually known, with sources.
What this is
Most of what is written about neck training online is written by people selling something, repeating each other, or both. Claims circulate for years without anyone checking where they came from. Meanwhile the genuinely rigorous work — military aviation research, crash-injury biomechanics, a hundred and thirty years of patent disclosures — sits unread because it was never written for lifters.
This site is an attempt to fix that. Every claim here traces to a source you can check. Where the evidence is thin, it says so. Where a popular belief turns out to be folklore, it says that too.

Three things most people get wrong
The neck responds like any other muscle, and it detrains like any other muscle. The comparison people imagine is “train versus stay the same.” The actual comparison is “train versus get weaker.” In two separate controlled studies — Danish military aircrew over twenty weeks, and amateur rugby players over six — the untrained control groups measurably lost cervical strength across the study period.
Elastic bands are not a load substitute at the top end. Measured against electromyography of pilots pulling actual G, elastic band resistance of any grade produced roughly the muscle activation of one G. It is a genuine place to start and a poor place to stay.
Neck training reduces risk. It does not confer immunity. In 6,704 high school athletes, every additional pound of neck strength was associated with 5% lower odds of concussion — and neck strength is one of the very few risk factors in collision sport an athlete can actually change. But nobody has run the trial that trains one group, leaves another untrained, and counts concussions, so anyone telling you a strong neck prevents concussion is selling you something.
